Come to the Spoke(n) Art Bike Ride. It meets at the corner of Figueroa & York (at the flag pole). North East Los Angeles has two dozen galleries & art houses in a two-mile radius & they'll travel to a selected group of them so that one can spend quality time at each stop. This ride is an entire evening worth of bikes, art & fun.

The ride will wind its way around the Eagle Rock, Highland Park & Sycamore Grove areas, stopping at selected galleries open that night as part of NELAart's ongoing 2nd Saturday Gallery Night.  The galleries will generally be open from 7 - 10p & run a wide spectrum of different genres & styles. If you get lost, or want to meet up with the ride, call (310) 902-5439 or 626.831.7970 for directions.

Rock Rose Gallery, 4108 N Figueroa, will be the last gallery on the ride. After that you can head over to the Bike Oven, 130 W Avenue 42, for the after-party. This week we're having a BLOCK PARTY/POT LUCK so bring your appetite and some baked goods or whatever is your specialty. And, bring your INSTRUMENTS. There'll be an open mic, well, no mic unless you bring it, but we're open for participation.

Both are close to Gold Line train stations (SouthWest Museum & Heritage Square) & several all-night bus lines that run on Figueroa.

Gallery itinerary available the week of the ride on-line & at the flagpole.  Maps will be provided at the flagpole & can also be picked up along the route.

This exhibit gallops with paintings, drawings and sculpture depicting the grace and splendor of superb equines. Frank and Sharon Romero, Denise Monaghan, Heather Hoggan, and Patrick Harper join the legions of artists who celebrate the horse through art. In an explosion of painterly color, Frank Romero creates "Cheval Francoise" through oils and prints. Childhood carousal horses are portrayed in Sharon Romero's intimate oils. Patrick Harper creates images of the vanished west through his horse and cowboy bronze sculptures and arroyo paintings. Denise Monaghan paints realistic portraits of horses in their natural habitats. Folk art equine assemblages by Heather Hoggan round up the herd.

The exhibit closes on Sunday, May 20 (Museums of the Arroyo Day). As a special treat, for Museums of the Arroyo Day we will provide a singular opportunity to draw a live horse.

Come see how these artists have transformed objects discarded as waste and saved them from becoming landfill. In keeping with many Earth Day celebrations around LA they invite you to see recycling in action. The found materials in the works on display include: wood, paper, cardboard, newspaper, plastic, glass, tile, bubble wrap, metal, aluminum, steel, concrete, wooden pallets, mattresses, plants, wire and more. The artwork exemplifies a state of mind -- a way of looking at an "obsolete" object from a new angle and recognizing that the reinterpreted form can transcend the no longer valid function. It is hammered, soldered, mounted, painted, molded, stitched, woven, carved, cut, torn, glued, pressed and banged-together. It is delightful and entertains us by its simplicity. The artists transmit their energy and enthusiasm and transform the ordinary into the beautiful. They deconstruct, reconstruct and rearrange parts into new units; they collect discarded resources - used, abandoned or recovered materials, and give them another chance.  The exhibit includes the art of 50 artists. There'll be live painting, live vibe, DJ.

On 4/21/07: Artist Kristen DeWitt will be demonstrating her unique style of action painting (doing the "disco") throughout the evening...witness the creativity! Bring coasters (old CDS) to paint on.

Also 4/21/07 :: Artist Walt Hall will be raffling off one of his paintings to raise funds for little Ava Jaymes-a teeny girl with cancer. For more info: awishforava.com.

Future Studio -->

Rob has transformed the doodle into an artform using a
pen and lots of ink. He was voted best piece at the recent Coffee Show curated by Ted Meyer. He has worked as a graphic designer, cartoonist, illustrator, custodian, Plant Manager and Musician, playing Bass in Burning Sensations' "Belly of the Whale" and with "Andy and the Rattlesnakes".

Update: Work continues on the repainting of Mr Boy. They've had a minor setback in their permit approvals, but they believe it will work out. They will let you know if we need more support letters. Not to worry at this point, but their projected installation date may get pushed back. Fingers crossed.

Christian Tedeschi's recent work is an interaction with found objects that are characteristic of and from the streets of Long Beach and LA. It began as an attempt to clean a neighborhood of corporate and industrial flotsam and became something else.

This is a group exhibit featuring Los Angeles artists: Jill Newman, Jodie Berry, Karl Erickson, Laurie Nye, Nicolau Vergueiro, Samara Caughey and Steven L. Anderson. Come and enjoy the bountiful offerings the artists will lay out for your delectation...

Jill Newman offers a sumptuous realization of romanticized beauty in and among hidden monuments of forgotten vistas and fringe societies. Jodie Berry provides a humid swamp of wistful longing, wild landscapes and verdant patterns arranged to dazzle and disorient. Karl Erickson brings over-ripe colors, magic frolicking and surging waves of sound.  Laurie Nye serves up an overflowing tapestry of voyeuristic owl eyes, lush mushroom gardens and colorful displays of minutiae fresh from the steamy American South. Nicolau Vergueiro doles out a sense of ticklish glamour, combining opulent materials idiosyncratically, seemingly haphazardly but cohesively to create magical, sculptural "tablescapes," which rarely ever sit upon a table. Samara Caughey delights with visual refreshments through elegant and deceivingly delicate displays of shapes and colors. Samara will also lead an unexpected hunt for useful negative spaces, while entertaining riddles and references of both ancient and modern history. Steven L. Anderson shows up with his feverish political quandaries and abundant energy displayed through brightly colored paintings of metaphorical succulents and their resilient and interconnected roots.

Three Chicanarte Greats: Carlos Almaráz, Gilbert "Magú" Luján & Jose Lozano

Artists' Rreception: Saturday, April 14, 7 - 10p
Carlotta's Passion Fine Art, 2012 Colorado Blvd, LA, CA
April 14 - May 20

Carlos Almaráz (1949 - 89), a member of Los Four, the internationally famous Chicano art collective, created brilliant moody works which blend his personal and cultural sensibilities, European symbolist and impressionist influences, and the Fauve's color palette. Almaraz's works in this exhibit also reflect the rich legacy of his complex, emotional odyssey.

Gilbert "Magú" Luján, the founder of Los Four, is an ever popular sculptor, muralist and painter. The design principal for the Hollywood & Vine station on the Red Line, Magu uses his Mesoamerican heritage, as well as current popular art and cultural folk sources for his Chicanarte.

Jose Lozano presents stylized works depicting scenes of the day and night lives of la gente. His works are influenced by his childhood memories of Juarez, including Mexican comic book character stylization, and his academic training. He neither idolizes nor condemns his subjects, all of whom are, after all, subject to the human condition.

Works by Frank Romero, another beloved Los Four collective member, will also be available at Carlotta's Passion Fine Art during this exhibit.

The locations in these large scale color photographs create feelings of connectedness and ascendancy, anticipation and maybe a little dread; locations that transcend the confines of time, where the past coexists with the present, and fact and fiction become one. The viewers Intuition determines if the given locale is special or just another vacant lot, a hallowed site of worship or tragedy.

CALLS FOR ARTISTS

Reminder Lummis Day Big Puppet/Community Art Pageant Brainstorming Meeting: Monday, April 16, 7:30p, Acorn Gallery, 135 N. Ave 50. You may remember last year's Lummis Day Parade down the Arroyo with the 5 big puppets made by the Arroyo Arts Collective and community members; the NELAbikes! Bike Parade down Figueroa in 2005; the Northeast Trees Streamspirit Parade along the buried stream route in 2004; and the Arroyofest Parade on the freeway in 2003. These were great community building, fun events for all ages, celebrating the local culture and environment and sharing a vision. Well, we're doing it again, as part of the Arroyo Art Collectives' "Puppets, Puppets, Puppets Festival". This time, instead of spending lots of time and energy on making new big puppets, we're going to use what we've got and focus on conveying a story or concept with simple art additions as needed. We would love to see decorated bikes doing synchronized turns, circuit benders giving voice to dragons and flying saucers, dancing oak trees, a rainbow of kids, dogs, drums.... please bring your ideas. RSVP by email. If you can't make that night but want to be involved, send us an email. Feel free to pass this on to others who might be interested. Thanks, Jennifer Murphy and Beth Petersen Jennifer@JMurphyart.com

Call for Artists/Workshop Presenters for Lummis Day Interactive Installation: They're looking for artists/workshop presenters to be part of the interactive installation. The art produced at the various workshops will be integrated into an on-going, continually evolving installation at Sycamore Grove Park. All media and types of workshops welcome. If you have an idea for a workshop or just want to help with a workshop or putting together the installation, contact RuthAnne Tarletz at sarte1mex@aol.com or 626.831.7970. The next Recreation, Culture and the Arts meeting for the ASNC is scheduled for Thursday, April 19, 7p, Hermon Community Church Fellowship Hall where they'll be planning the interactive installation. If you can't make that meeting you still can participate in the event.
